The back label is the one that doesnt have the pictureseque scene of the vineyard or the name like “Château d’Yquem” with its royal crown. This label hardly seems important enough to read. However, it may contain information that is useful to you, or at least interesting. It’s certainly worth a peek.
Laws control the exact content on the front label, but they say nothing about the back. That’s left to the vintner’s (or exporter’s) imagination.
The back label is where bottlers may tell you what foods are a good match for the wine or what temperature brings out its peak flavor. Or the label may offer an engaging story about the wine or the winery. Or maybe a map of the winegrowing region. Or a history of the grape. Or maybe some technical gobbledygook about pH or Brix. But you won’t know if you don’t look.
